Bishop of Derry, Most Rev Dr Dónal McKeown, planted an oak tree in the grounds of St Patrick's Church, Pennyburn, following 12 noon Mass on St Patrick's Day.

Oak trees were also planted at St Joseph's Church, Galliagh and St Brigid's Church, Carnhill - all the churches in the parish of the Three Patrons.

The planting of the tree in Pennyburn took place on the 90th anniversary of the opening of St Patrick's Church.

The tree plantings were a result of Lily Tyre, a dedicated member of the St Brigid's faith community, suggesting to the parish council that a memorial in the form of oak trees be planted to commemorate those deceased parishioners whose faith and commitment was the bedrock of the parish community.

The parish council was greatly in favour of this idea and an approach was made to Derry City and Strabane District Council to see if it could furnish the parish with oak trees.
