Councillor Doyle to propose world famous Derry musician, Phil Coulter, for the Freedom of the City to Council at the end of this month
Aontú Councillor for Derry, Emmet Doyle, will propose world famous Derry musician, Phil Coulter, for the Freedom of the City at the end of this month.
Known worldwide for his songwriting and performances, Councillor Doyle said he was delighted that the man behind ‘The Town I Loved So Well’ accepted the nomination.
Councillor Doyle said: “It’s long overdue that we as a city honour one of our most famous sons. I spoke to Phil a few weeks ago asking him if he would accept the nomination and he graciously accepted.
"He is of us and continues to this day to espouse his pride at being from this City. His many accolades and achievements have also put Derry on the map as the hometown of such a prolific entertainer.
"For me this is a no brainer. On Phil’s 80th year his contribution more than merits our City’s highest honour, and it will be an honour for me to propose him at the March full Council meeting which I have no doubt will secure unanimous support.
"In advance of the meeting, all of us should take stock of the impact Phil has made. I look forward to progressing the path to admitting him to the Roll of Freemen."
