There was sadness among the local athletics community last week following the passing of one of the community's stalwarts.
Jim Reid MBE's funeral was held yesterday in Limavady after his death on Friday.
The 85-year-old was a founding member of the Roe Valley Athletic Club and was instrumental in its merger with North Coast Runners to form the new Springwell Running Club in 2002.
The club has paid tribute to Mr Reid, describing him as a 'true gentleman'.
“It was with great sadness that we learned of the passing of our club President Mr Jim Reid MBE on 18th March at the age of 85,” said a spokesperson.
“A prolific and competitive athlete in his own right, Jim had an ability to spot and encourage talent and is remembered for stopping to speak with the junior athletes on a Saturday morning when they trained in the Roe Valley Country Park, just a short distance from his home.
“His impressive running CV included the Boston Marathon and representative honours for Northern Ireland in the International Masters Cross Country.
“He was frequently seen at races across the country sporting a ginger wig and tartan leggings as he proclaimed his Scottish heritage.
“One particular appearance at the Race Over The Glen on New Year's Day saw him affectionately christened the “Tartan Terror” by the commentator.
“Many local runners will remember Jim from the Jude Gallagher Memorial Road Race, which he religiously attended to remember his friend.
“Even when unable to take part in the race Jim would be there taking on the role of official starter, presenting prizes, and adding to the craic, banter, and camaraderie of the event.
“Jim Reid was a true gentleman and a real character who did so much for Springwell RC and the promotion and development of running in the area.
“Springwell RC would wish to offer their sincere condolences to Jims family, friends and all those who knew him at this time,” they added.
Members of the public also paid online tributes to Mr Reid, with one contributor describing him as one of the 'true characters' of local running.
“He really was a true gentleman, and I feel blessed to have known Jimmy for many years. My deepest condolences to his family and his many friends in Springwell Running Club and beyond,” they said
Another simply recalled how Jim had made him feel.
“I didn't know Jim personally but I remember his words of encouragement as I ran along the Roemill Road. I recall him making me smile,” they said.
