Derry native, Conor Lynch, started making music at just 14 years old
Derry lad, Conor Lynch, is a DJ and music producer and has recently released his latest single Apollo.
The 20-year-old, who is known musically as Subtrax, started creating tracks at just 14 years old and his potential was clear to everyone as Conor says for him, "making music was inevitable."
Conor's dad is also a musician and was and continues to be a major influence on Conor's music intake and taste, "Growing up I was always surrounded by music," he said.
"All my music influence is down to my dad who has been playing it my whole life and I wouldn't be where I am right now if it wasn’t for him.
"My dad is a musician and a singer/songwriter which opened my ears to all genres of music. This gave me the basis for making my own music as I grew older.
Conor with his father, Roddy, who he describes as his biggest inspiration
"As someone who was always capable with technology and computers, it was a natural progression for me to start making electronic music.
"Seeing acts like Bicep, Denis Sulta and Patrick Topping tour the world making music and playing it in front of thousands of people, making a career out of something they love doing, it just seemed amazing to me and is driving me towards doing the same."
Conor grew up surrounded by music at home and his love for music only grew as it became more and more accessible.
Conor continued: "I grew up listening to the usual chart stuff but was also surrounded by all kinds of music at home from classic rock and pop to soul and even American country.
"There was always music being played or listened to. YouTube and later Spotify were game changers. Access to almost any tune from any genre of music within seconds."
Derry native, Conor, is currently living in Liverpool and studying Computer and Network Security at Liverpool John Moores University.
Despite this, he says it is music that drives him daily, "Making music is my passion and although I am also still studying at university, it is music that gets me up in the morning and sometimes keeps me up half the night.
"If I’m not performing, I am creating or producing and perfecting a tune. It’s not really a choice I consciously made. Music chooses you and I’m so glad it did."
Conor attended events prior to the 2020 lockdown that inspired him to work hard and perfect his music when lockdown hit and performers were initially left unable to gig.
"I was lucky enough to attend some big events in the years leading up to lockdown," he said. "I guess they influenced me in such a way that I started working towards that goal of producing and performing.
"I created constantly during the last two years and worked really hard at learning my craft. I’m still learning every day. That’s the thing about music: it's a never ending gift that keeps on giving.
"I’ve mostly been doing smaller events like everyone else over the last two years when restrictions allowed.
"I’ve recently started to do larger venues. I performed a seven hour marathon gig on March 17 with Seratona Events at Lost Lounge in Liverpool and I have a charity event in Manchester on March 23."
Conor's latest track, Apollo, is out now and has already been played on Mixmag and BBC Introducing.
Describing his latest song, Conor said: "Apollo captures various sounds that encapsulate an almost galactic feel with a hard hitting bassline and muffled vocal samples from the famous Apollo 11 space mission.
"The implementation of every element has been carefully selected to take the crowd by surprise.
"The track has already been picked up by Dave Monks, BBC Radio Merseyside and it definitely will not be the last you’ll hear of it."
Conor's new track, Apollo, is available to stream on all platforms and can be purchased on his Bandcamp.
