Derry Court told man broke bottle over his own head

A man who was observed on CCTV breaking a bottle over his own head has been jailed at Derry Magistrate's Court today for a series of offences.

Domhnall Keenan (22) of Iona Court in Derry admitted a range of offences including assault, possessing drugs and criminal damage to a tag.

The court heard that on May 30 police were called to an ongoing domestic incident.

They spoke to the injured party and she told them she had been drinking with Keenan and after they returned home a row had started that spilled out into the driveway of the house.

The woman appeared to police to be 'nervous' and she said Keenan had shouted 'I am going to rip your throat out'.

While police were there neighbours approached them and said Keenan had been at their back door shouting threats.

The court also heard that on October 15 Keenan was observed to hit himself over the head with a bottle.

Police located him and he was foaming at the mouth and appeared very intoxicated.

He was taken to Altnagelvin Hospital and while there he asked to go to the toilet and while there tried to dispose of two Pregablin tablets down the toilet.

A further charge of criminal damage to a tag was also before the court.

The court heard that the defendant's father phoned police to say Keenan was cutting his tag off.

When interviewed he made full admissions.

Defence counsel Stephen Mooney said it was hard to know which was 'the most pathetic' of the range of offences.

He said his client had pleaded guilty at an early opportunity.

Keenan was sentenced to 3 months in prison.
