Jail for man at Derry Court on two counts of theft

A man has been jailed at Derry Magistrate's Court today for two counts of theft.

Martin Stokes (26) of Lavery Park in Derry admitted stealing two t-shirts valued at more than £160 from the Tommy Hilfiger shop in Ferryquay Street on November 13 2018.

He also admitted stealing two bottles of vodka from Eurospar in Dungiven on October 7 this year.

The court heard that on November 13 2018 police were called to the Hilfiger shop to reports that a member of the travelling community was acting aggressively and it was believed he was going to steal something.

The man left the shop and got into a van.

An examination of CCTV showed Stokes looking at shirts then entering a changing room before coming out wearing a shirt which he then changed.

He then left the store with two shirts stuffed down his trousers.

The court heard that on October 7 this year CCTV from the shop in Dungiven showed Stokes stealing two bottles of vodka valued at over £70.

Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley said his client had pleaded guilty and deserved credit for that.

District Judge Barney McElholm said that Stokes had 11 thefts on his record and had been dealt with in a number ways.
He said Stokes did not 'seem to want to learn'.

He sentenced Stokes to 4 months in prison.
