Radio Foyle's 'News at One' fails to air

BBC Radio Foyle's lunchtime news programme 'The News at One' failed to air today.

No afternoon news bulletins were broadcast from Radio Foyle today either.

In a requested statement, a BBC spokesperson told Derry Now: "The News at One wasn’t broadcast on Wednesday 7 December due to staff illness.

"We hope to resume the full live programme as soon as possible"

One concerned Derry Now reader said that the lack of North West news coverage was very apparent today.

They added: "It gave listeners a worrying indication of what might happen if BBC NI's proposed axing of Radio Foyle's Breakfast Show goes ahead next year.

"Derry and the wider North West region needs to hear its own news broadcasts. It needs Radio Foyle, needs its journalists, and needs its own voice. The whole community must oppose the cuts.

"I hope today is not a sign of what we can expect come the new year."
