Man who threatened to kill his partner and her son remanded at Derry Court

Councillor Carr demands return of Derry courts from Coleraine

A man who allegedly told his partner he was from the INLA and he was going to kill her and her son has been remanded in custody at Derry Magistrate's Court today.

Jason John Curry (44) of Mount Street in Derry appeared charged with an array of domestic violence charges.

He was charged with assaulting a female on December 15, criminal damage to household items on the same date, making a threat to kill and falsely imprisoning the woman again on the same date.

He was also charged with assaults on the same female on December 7 and 12 and engaging in a course of domestic abuse between dates in December.

A police officer connected the accused to the charges and opposed bail.

She told the court that on December 15 police received a 999 call from the woman's son saying she was being assaulted by her partner.

Police responded and the woman told them she had been in a relationship with the defendant for some 6 weeks.

She told police on December 7 she had been having a drink with Curry when 'a verbal altercation' broke out and she went to the bathroom to get away but she said Curry followed and pushed her causing her to fall.

The police were also told that on December 12 Curry had called to collect belongings and the woman told him she had looked him up on the Internet.

He then alleged he slapped her across the face.

The woman said that Curry continually messaged her claiming to off the drink and drugs.

The court then heard on December 15 Curry called for his belongings and she told him to stay at the door but he followed her inside locked the door and said 'this is my time now'.

She said he grabbed her by the throat, banged her head and pulled her by the hair.

When she tried to leave the room he trailed her back by the hair and threatened both her and her son saying he would kill them as he was in the INLA.

He was also sat her on a chair and sat on top of her to stop her leaving.

The woman said he hit her with a vase and a bottle, headbutted her, bit her and threw a Christmas tree across the room.
Police observed injuries on her and the fact that the room was in disarray.

At interview Curry denied all the allegations and said it was 'a good relationship' but could not account for the injuries or the disarray in the room.

Bail was opposed due to the risk of re-offending as Curry had 63 previous convictions 14 of them for domestic offences against a previous partner.

The officer said Curry was 'a high risk perpetrator of domestic violence.

Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley said that it was' not the easiest bail application. '

He said that the defendant lived some 4 miles away from the alleged victim and asked for bail with stringent conditions.

Deputy District Judge Chris Holmes said that Curry was' almost certain to re-offend ' and refused bail.

Curry was remanded in custody to appear again on January 12.
