Road traffic collision victim Eileen Kennedy was well liked and respected

Eileen Kennedy was a popular and professional post mistress who had only recently retired

The close-knit community of Killybegs is coming to terms with the tragic death of one of its best-known citizens.

Recently retired postmistress Eileen Kennedy, who was in her sixties, died after being struck by a van late on Tuesday afternoon in the town’s Main Street.

Cllr Niamh Kennedy (Ind) said: “Everyone is just stunned. It is such a tragedy, such an awful shock.

“Eileen was the post mistress and her husband Frankie was a postman. Both well known throughout the community.

“Eileen recently took retirement when the post office in the town closed and Super Valu took it on.

“She was very well liked, very professional and discreet, very highly respected.

“The community is in shock. My condolences to Eileen’s family.”

It is understood that Eileen was out for a walk when tragedy struck.

The fatal road traffic collision took place at 5.45pm on Tuesday. Eileen was sadly pronounced dead at the scene and her remains were removed for post mortem examination.

Garda Appeal

Gardaí are asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision to come forward. They are also appealing to those with camera footage from the area at the time to make it available to them.

Funeral Arrangements

Eileen's remains will repose at her residence on Thursday from 11am to 4pm and 6pm to 10pm.

Removal will take place on Friday morning at 10.30am to St Mary of the Visitation Church, Killybegs for 11am Funeral Mass, with removal afterwards to Lakelands Crematorium Cavan for cremation. The Mass will be streamed live on www.mcnmedia.tv

Family flowers only; donations in lieu if desired to the Irish Heart Foundation.

Eileen is survived by her loving husband Frankie, sons Colin, Ronan and Aiden, daughters-in-law Clare and Laura, grandchildren Róisín and Ciara, sister Mary, sisters-in-law and a wide circle of relatives and friends.
