Donegal Airport
Flights to and from Scotland are vital to increase tourism in the north west, a councillor said at a recent meeting of Glenties Municipal District.
Sinn Féin Councillor John Shéamais Ó Fearraigh said one of the difficulties in terms of tourism for the region is that the flights from Donegal to Scotland have not been reinstated.
Cllr Ó Fearraigh was alluding to a meeting which was held between the Diaspora Officer and Donegal County Council Ambassador, Packie Bonner, with the aim of establishing a strong Diaspora network within key Scottish cities such as Glasgow, Edinburgh and Dundee.
Further meetings will take place in 2023 with Tourism Ireland also to be involved.
Cllr Ó Fearraigh said that while Packy Bonner's role and the connection with Scotland is a positive one however one of the difficulties he has come across is that the flight from Donegal Airport to Scotland has not been reinstated.
He said: "It is no good going over there telling them how great things are here if we don't have flights. The airport is so important to have here and then the hotels can put packages together and highlight walking, fishing, the islands ...as a council we have to put pressure on government and on airlines that we need to get the service re-established."
There has been a number of calls for the flights been reinstated from councillors in the region.
