Creeslough explosion: Hopefully we can get an answer- Garda Commissioner

Garda Commissioner Draw Harris says he hopes the garda investigation into the explosion at the Applegreen Service Station in Creeslough which claimed the lives of 10 people would come to a satisfactory conclusion.

Speaking in Lifford yesterday (Monday) following a meeting with the Donegal Joint Policing Committee members, Commissioner Harris addressed the ongoing investigation that started with that blast 103 days ago on October 7.

He said together with the experts, he hoped they would get to a satisfactory conclusion as to what caused the explosion. They had a responsibility to investigate and report to the coroner on the matter.

"Ultimately we would hope to get to some final explanation as to what happened and that's what we are working towards and why we have put so much time and effort into the examination of the scene and gathering witness statements."

He revealed experts who deal with this sort of gas explosion-type tragedy have been employed to assist and provide their professional experience and expertise in terms of the investigation.

"The investigation is properly and well-resourced in terms of what it set out to do. It just has to have time to follow through. As you can imagine the complexity of the evidence that is being retrieved and then expert analysis and conclusions drawn from that but I can't say what the future is going to unfold in respect of it but hopefully we can get to an answer," he said.
