Donegal County Council’s search for a Vacant Homes Officer (VHO)  and a Town Regeneration Officer (TRO) could be coming to an end shortly.

Chairman of the Lifford-Stranorlar Municipal District, Cllr Patrick McGowan has revealed these positions are expected to be filled next month.

“In the interim, some members of staff are processing applications that are being submitted under the Croi Conaithe Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant. Sixty-seven applications have been received already by the council and works are underway on a few. The remaining applications are at various stages in the process – being assessed, awaiting further information from the applicant, at the technical assessment stage and so forth.”

He added once the new team is in place, plans will also be developed to address empty properties and dereliction in priority locations.

He also welcomed a number of measures by the government to support refurbishing vacant properties.

He said these would prove invaluable and help direct people interested in refurbishment and repair works or if they wanted to buy or renew properties

He stressed there was a need for vacant properties in all towns to be tackled and now was the right time to avail of the generous government support on offer.
