Tremors from a devastating earthquake that has claimed almost 8,000 lives in Turkey and Syria were recorded in Donegal.

The death toll passed 7,800 on Tuesday night following a quake that shook the Turkey-Syria border on Monday.

Clear signals from the earthquake were recorded at St Columba's College in Stranorlar.

Physics teacher Brendan O'Donoghue, who was instrumental in the school joining the international Seismology in Schools network, shared the data.

A seismometer in the school runs 24/7 and showed the 7.8 and 7.5 magnitude events this week.

“Anything that makes the earth shake, we can record it here if it has a high enough intensity,” Mr O'Donoghue said.

In 2019, the seismometer recorded its 1,000th earthquake.

The school is one of 55 primary and secondary schools nationwide that participates in DIAS’s Seismology in Schools programme.

The station, designated Station DL02, is located in the school physics lab.

Mr O’Donoghue said: “We monitor the seismometer daily and upload the recorded earthquake data to the International Seismology in Schools website, where the information is shared with schools across Ireland, the UK and the USA.
