Letterkenny's leakage reduction journey continues with work on Port Road

Letterkenny's leakage reduction journey continues with work on Port Road

Work to start soon on leak reduction programme at Letterkenny's Port Road

Plugging gaps in the water supply system to the biggest town in Donegal is no mean task but Uisce Éireann is happy that it is on the right track.

The company says it is putting a stop to leakage across Letterkenny with work to begin replacing another section of old water mains within days.

With works almost complete on High Road, crews will now begin removing 300 metres of old water mains on Port Road and lay new pipes which will eliminate leakage and reduce sporadic outages.

The Port Road works, along the R229, will take place at nighttime from 7pm to 7am daily.

Uisce Éireann’s Networks Regional Lead Declan Cawley is looking forward to providing customers on the Letterkenny network with a more reliable water supply.

“All of these works are part of a significant investment by Uisce Éireann to upgrade the water network in County Donegal.”

Declan thanked the local businesspeople and residents for their patience and cooperation.

“Fewer bursts and less leakage mean a stronger supply for homes and businesses. Completing these mains replacement projects is good news for everyone.”

For the safe delivery of these essential works, temporary traffic lights will be in place along Port Road. However, they will be removed by 7am daily and traffic will revert to normal during the daytime.

At nighttime, areas of work will be limited to short sections to minimise the impact on the community and local and emergency traffic will be accommodated at all times.

The works may involve some short-term water interruptions and the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours’ notice prior to any planned water interruptions.

Farrans Construction, the contractor carrying out the works on behalf of Uisce Éireann, is expected to have the project completed by the end of next month.

The Letterkenny projects form part of Uisce Eireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme and will help Uisce Éireann achieve its 2030 goal of a national leakage rate of 25%.

The National Leakage Reduction team has made great strides since 2018 when the leakage rate stood at 46%.
