Donegal Town has been earmarked as a location to develop a Green Hub

New initiative to be launched in Donegal Town

Donegal Town has been selected as one of six pilot towns nationally and the only one in Co Donegal to become a Green Hub in an initiative delivered by MyWaste and Donegal County Council.

MyWaste is an information portal and Ireland’s official guide to managing your waste and an initiative by the Regional Waste Management Offices on behalf of the Department of Climate Action, Communications and the Environment.

Waste Awareness Officer, Suzanne Bogan told Tuesday's meeting of the Donegal Municipal District that the pilot aims to help businesses to maximise the segregation of business waste, increase recycling rates and reduce contamination as well as having a positive engagement with staff through using MyWaste resources free of charge.

These included information posters, stickers for bins, video animations and testimonials

She explained how over the next six months they would be working with businesses and organisations as well as collaborating with Donegal ETB and Donegal LEO, both of which have a number of programmes and courses available for businesses.

Cllr Barry Sweeny congratulated all involved in getting Donegal Town on the pilot scheme.

"This could be the start of something very important in this area. I could see an opportunity for a small business or a community group to open a repair shop as part of this programme."

He added it would be good to look at encouraging people to fix things rather than replacing them with something else as happens in the 'disposable world' they currently lived in.

Ms Bogan agreed to explore the idea of a repair facility for the project if interest was shown. She added the idea of a pop-up day with various experts in the waste management area was also being explored.

The initiative will be launched at 8am on Tuesday, February 28 in the Abbey Hotel, Donegal Town to allow no interruptions to their business day.
