A three-year-old dog which rescuers presumed was dumped by their owner was found dead on Thursday.
Twin Towns Lost and Found Dogs manager Doreen Russell said two dogs were tied with orange cord to a gate in the Gleneely area beside the school, near the Killygordon crossroads.
Doreen said: "The two dogs were tied so they were joined together so then the wee one must gone in through a fence which resulted in a wire around his neck and he died. The bigger one must have pulled away."
The bigger dog sat beside the dog which had died for a while before it escaped. The second dog got off the cord and was seen roaming around the area. Farmers and locals tried to catch the dog in efforts to save them.
"The sad thing about it is the wee dog could have been rehomed," she said.
The dogs were chipped, Russel said.
Doreen said the rescue was traumatic for those involved. Doreen said the number of dogs that are being dumped and surrendered is increasing. The second is thin at present and it will be a month before he can be rehomed.
Doreen has a big garage on premises converted for dogs and she also takes care of cats.
"We are running with few volunteers. I am very lucky with volunteers, I have someone every morning that cleans out the area every morning. I have someone who helps me with the vet runs and someone else who helps with the cats. I have two cateries and it is just a matter of feeding them."
She said it will be a month before the second dog is rehomed because she said that it was very neglected and was out in bad weather.
