Objections lodged against plans for extension to Lough Eske Castle hotel

Lough Eske Castle is the only five-star hotel in Donegal

Objections have been lodged against plans to build a large two-storey extension at the five-star Lough Eske Castle hotel near Donegal Town.
Lough Eske Developments Ltd lodged plans in January for the extension that would add 24 suites and four bedrooms. The development would increase the accommodation at bthe hotel from 97 rooms and suites.
Five objections have been lodged against the plans for the building which dates back to 1861 and is located close to Lough Eske.
Objections include that the proposed extension will interfere with wildlife, including red squirrels and pine martens, and that roads in the area cannot sustain the increased traffic that will result.

Concerns have also been raised about the impact of the development on local water and sewage infrastructure.
The Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage has recommended conditions if the proposed development is given the go-ahead due to its proximity to a protected castle site close to the hotel. The department stated in a submission that it is possible that archaeological features/material could be impacted and damaged.
The hotel, which recently celebrated 15 years in business, is owned by Harcourt Developments which is headed up by Donegal-born developer Pat Doherty.
A decision from Donegal County Council on the application is due early next month.
