Letterkenny man put off the road after two drug-driving charges

A Letterkenny man who was stopped by Gardai on two occasions and found to be under the influence of cannabis has been banned from driving for two years.

James Scanlon, aged 27, appeared at Letterkenny District Court charged with two counts of drug driving.

Inspector Paul Gallagher told the court that Gardai stopped Scanlon in Convoy on January 23, 2022 driving a black Ford Focus at 10.48pm.

He was given an oral fluid test by Gardai which he failed and was later taken to Letterkenny Garda Station to be processed.

The test later proved positive for cannabis.

On June 6, 2021 at Long Lane in Letterkenny, Gardai had stopped a Ford Fiesta being driven erratically by Scanlon.

Again he was given an oral fluid test which he failed and was again to Letterkenny Garda station to be processed and the test was returned positive for cannabis.

Scanlon's solicitor, Mr Patsy Gallagher, said his client was taking the cannabis for medicinal use for an old injury and was fully cooperative.

He has since received some assistance to cope with his issue of using cannabis with Mr Gallaghwr adding that he was in the court's hands.

Judge Eiteain Cunningham fined Scanlon, of Meadowbank, Letterkenny, a total of €400 and disqualified him for a total of two years.
