Seamus McGinley’s dedication to Carrick lives on as bridge is named after him

The ceremony took place at the opening of the River Walk on Saturday

A fantastic community project in Carrick has been named after a dedicated community worker, the late Seamus McGinley.

The River Walk was officially opened on Saturday, with a poignant ceremony naming the Carrick footbridge in honour of Seamus and everything he did for the community.

Seamus died a year ago, in early March 2022. Just a few months earlier in November 2021, Seamus was Chairperson of Coiste Forbartha na Carraig when the newly restored footbridge opened to the public. It was a proud day for Seamus and for the community.

Naming the bridge in his honour is a fitting tribute to a man who was described by his Coiste Forbartha na Carraig colleagues as: “a tireless and enthusiastic worker and a great friend to all members of the committee.”

The new river walk is a great addition to this outdoor amenity. As well as the walk and the footbridge, there is an outdoor gym, with a picnic area and the children’s playground nearby.
