A man caught driving at 175km/h on one of Donegal's busiest roads, will be given a chance to keep his licence.

Ruairi Sweeney was detected at the speed, in a 100km/h zone, by Gardai operating a speed checkpoint at 10.10am.

Sweeney, aged 29 and from Carricklynn Avenue in Strabane, was before Letterkenny District Court on a charge of dangerous driving.

Traffic was moderate at the time of the detection, Sergeant Sean McDaid told the court.

Judge Éiteáin Cunningham told Ruairi Sweeney that she will consider reducing the charge to carefull driving, but only if the accused completes the Pro-Social driving course.

Mr Patsy Gallagher, Sweeney's solicitor, told the court that his client is employed to drive a company vehicle and the business is 'concerned' regarding his employment status.

The case was adjourned until July 3, 2023 to enable Sweeney to undertake the course. Sweeney was asked to pay €250 towards the course.
