The Lough Swilly Ferry service will not be affected by the impending refurbishment works at Rathmullan Pier.

There were fears that the large-scale works would impact on ferry crossings between Buncrana and Rathmullan.

Work on the €3.5 million revamp of the pier is set to begin soon with the pier expected to be closed for eight months.

At this months meeting of the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District, Councillor Pauric McGarvey questioned the impact of the works at the pier.

“The Lough Swilly Ferry will not be affected by the proposed works at Rathmullan pier,” Donegal County Council said in response.

“There may be some impact on access to the ferry at Rathmullan and parking, however, the ferry service will operate as normal.”

Grant aid of €3.5 million for the project was announced last year by the Minister for Agriculture and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue.

Structural repair work will be carried out with the existing deck and beams to be removed and replaced.

Crash barriers, handrails, ladders and lamp posts will all be replaced.
