A local councillor has suggested calling in the army to help tackle the problems caused by wild deer roaming in the area.
Independent Councillor Michael Mc Clafferty made the suggestion at the Glenties Municipal District meeting which was held in Dungloe on Tuesday.
The councillor said deer had caused serious damage to a car, at an area known locally as the mines, at the weekend, he said: “That deer went through the windscreen. If we don’t do something about it we may have a fatality. I can see how calling in the army may help with this issue. The army can either come or they can’t come,” he said.
The local representative said he felt a more concentrated approach was needed to deal with the issue, recalling deer hunters shooting deer in his area a number of months ago.
“I have seen too many cars damaged by deer and it is only a matter of time before something worse happens,” he warned.
Independent Councillor Micheál Choilm Mac Giolla Easbuig suggested bringing a member of the National Parks and Wildlife Service to meet councillors to discuss the issue.
Sinn Féin Councillor Marie Therese Gallagher said she was made aware of a deer causing damage to a car in the Loughanure area over the course of the weekend and said she would welcome expert advice in relation to the issue.
The points raised by Cllr McClafferty were noted at the meeting and references were made to a 2011 initiative when deer signs were erected in the municipal area.
Cllr Mc Clafferty said that the incident involving the deer on Saturday morning had caused injury. He said that should deer cause a serious accident immediate action will be taken to deal with the issue. The Dunfanaghy-based representative agreed with Cllr Mac Giolla Easbuig’s suggestion to bring in a member of the National Parks and Wildlife Service.
