Fintown
A traffic audit has found that 3,000 vehicles go through Fintown daily where a speed limit of 60kph is in place.
Work on the road through the village is currently underway and is due to finish in the second quarter of this year.
As part of the design stage, a traffic study was completed to quantify the speeding issues within the village. A public consultation in relation to the work was held in Fintown at an earlier juncture where concerns were raised by members of the local community about speeding.
The study found the average measured speed to be 56kph. However it was also found that some vehicles reach speeds of up to 126kph within the 60kph speed limit zone.
The active travel project is a scheme aimed to help pedestrians by providing and upgrading footpaths, crossing opportunities, car parking facilities and LED route lighting. It is also hoped the scheme will improve road surface comfort to all users by providing a smooth road pavement with a consistent cross section.
Those at the local school are keen to have cycle/scooter and parking facilities provided under a separate Greenschools scheme in support of the active travel project - which could be funded in due course by An Taisce.
Over €1m of funding has been provided to deliver this project through a variety of different allocations and sources.
