Connectivity issues blamed for delay in restoring GP to Churchill

Councillor Donal 'Mandy' Kelly has expressed his concern.

Connectivity issues have been blamed for the delay in restoring a regular GP presence in the Churchill area.

For 19 months now, there have been no regular GP at the Churchill health centre.

Until the regular service ceased, people in the area were able to avail of a GP service trhee days a week.

At the moment, patients are being treated at the Ark Medical Centre in Letterkenny and the Mayor of Letterkenny, Councillor Donal 'Mandy' Kelly has urged the HSE to act fast in addressing any issues that are hampering the restoration of a service in Churchill.

“The GPs are still providing home visits in the area, as well as seeing patients from Churchill in their practice in Letterkenny,” the HSE said in a written response to Senator Robbie Gallagher.

“The GPs have identified poor connectivity in the Churchill area as part of the reason why they haven't recommenced a GP clinic there.

“The HSE are currently investigating this matter in order for a GP service to recommence in Churchill as soon as possible.”

Councillor Kelly noted a positive response, but remains concerned about the HSE's lack of haste.

“I feel that it's not happening quickly enough,” Councillor Kelly said.

“There is a major issue regarding these good people in the Churchill and surrounding areas securing appointments through the Ark Medical Centre as their calls are not being answered.

“This is not good enough. I am requesting that this also be looked into and this matter addressed as a matter of urgency.”

Councillor Kelly has previously called on the Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly, to intervene.

He said: “I am grateful that work is being done to address the connectivity issues and that a commitment is made to have a GP service back in Churchill, but I ask that everything be done to move the forward.

“The residents in Churchill and surrounding areas need this vital service.”
