A major redevelopment is set to transform the visits experience at Fanad Lighthouse.

The lighthouse is one of Donegal’s best known sites, overlooking Lough Swilly, and is now set for an upgrade.

A new multi-use visitors experience centre, spanning 963 square metres, will be constructed as part of the works.

A request for planning permission has been lodged with Donegal County Council by Údarás na Gaeltachta. The local authority say that a decision is due by the end of May.

There are plans to add 22 new car making spaces and three bus spaces as well as an additional bus drop off area, external seating area and a children’s play area.

The proposed development would see a partial demolition of the existing ticket office and shop to facilitate the works.

The documents also provide for the upgrading of the wastewater treatment system while the work would also include improved landscaping, boundary treatments, pedestrian access and public lighting.

Fanned lighthouse has been a working lighthouse since 1817 and was opened to the public as a visitor attraction in 2016. The not-for-profit social enterprise is tun voluntarily by Forbairt Fhánada Cuideachta.
