Preparations are well underway for the Africa Day celebrations here in Donegal.
It will take place in Letterkenny on Saturday, May 27.
Africa Day represents an opportunity to acknowledge a diffuse, diverse, and
important group of people from over 50 African countries, who enrich and make
a valuable contribution to Irish society.
Forty-eight countries share the area of mainland Africa, plus six island nations are considered to be part of the continent. All in all, there are 54 sovereign African countries and two disputed areas, namely Somaliland, an autonomous region of Somalia and Western Sahara, occupied by Morocco and claimed by the Polisario.
Funding is applied for from Irish Aid at the Department of Foreign Affairs which will allow for events of art and culture, music, literature, business, food and community development to mark Africa Day in this county.
It is understood that Donegal County Council will be working closely with Intercultural Platform to develop and deliver Donegal’s Africa Day celebrations and people from all over the county will be encouraged to come along and enjoy the events.
