A boat engine failure off the Donegal coast this afternoon ended well at Teelin Pier after the Killybegs Coast Guard had been alerted to the situation at 4.30pm.

The boat was between Muckross Head and Teelin Pier at the time, when the engine problem developed.

Shane McCrudden, Officer in Charge of the Killybegs Coast Guard commended the occupants of the boat "for doing the right thing".

He told donegallive.ie:

"The vessel was totally prepared for such eventualities and had the necessary equipment and PPE (personal protection equipment) gear onboard.

"They did the right thing and called the coast guard as soon as they became aware of the potential danger. Engine failure is a serious worry for all involved.

"Of course we are still at the start of the May Bank Holiday weekend, so we are asking anybody afloat or near the coastline to be extra alert. If you see or thing there is danger, dial 112 and ask for the coastguard.

"Those in the boat, did everything correct and it was text book, in terms of what they were supposed to do. We train for days like this and are pleased that all ended well. After our boat was launched the crew made their way quickly to the area and took the casualty boat under tow. They towed the boat to Teelin Pier to the awaiting shore team."

If you see someone in trouble in or near the water or think that they might be in trouble dial 112/999 and ask for the Coast Guard, Mr McCrudden concluded.
