Gardaí are encouraging members of the local community in Glenties to attend a property marking event in the town.
The event is taking place in the Market Hall on May 18 between 7pm and 9pm.
It is being run as part of the Property Marking Ireland initiative - a community-led crime prevention program run in partnership with gardaí and Donegal Public Participation Network.
The initiative is encouraging the marking of property with the owner’s Eircode, which is a unique identifier. The initiative also involves the displaying of a sticker or sign to show that households or businesses are participating in the program.
The mark that is made on the property is a physical mark which is etched into the property and is very difficult to remove. The mark is made by a specially designed machine which embosses the property item with small dots in the pattern of the Eircode.
It can be used on items such as bikes, garage and garden tools, power tools, farm equipment, machinery, trailers, outboard engines etc.
Gardaí say the crime prevention program will also allow the detection, identification, and return of stolen and lost property to its rightful owner since the program involves marking property items with the Eircode Number of the owner- a unique identifier.
Members of the community are being encouraged to attend and ensure they bring their correct Eircode.
