Tributes have been paid following the death of a man who was instrumental in the development of the LyIT School of Tourism in Killybegs.

Brian Whitelaw passed away peacefully on Sunday at his home in Summerhill, Donegal Town.

He managed the Hotel and Catering School from 1992 and was said to have been instrumental in the college becoming a part of LyIT (now ATU Donegal). He was a senior lecturer at the college until his retirement nine years ago.

“He was a great force with a gentle touch,” ATU Donegal said.

“He was a man who had an obvious passion for the work he did, and this was clear in the way that he encouraged and developed both staff and students.

“Brian retired in 2014, but his sad passing defines the end of an era. RIP Brian.”

He is survived by brothers Paddy, Derry, Martin and Paul, sisters Mary, Ann and Helen, and a wide circle of family and friends.

A civil funeral service took place on Wednesday the Lakelands Crematorium in Cavan, followed by cremation.
