The old Glenties Courthouse building
The development of the Brian Friel Centre in Glenties moved a step forward today following a decision by
Donegal County Council to lease the former courthouse at Mill Road together with its enclosed yard to the Brian Friel Trust CLG.
It is felt Friel's international reputation as a writer and the development of the centre has the potential to increase the number of visitors and tourists to the town, thereby supporting other local businesses, especially in the service sector.
Approval for its disposal was initially granted at the March meeting of the Glenties Municipal District but it had to come before today's full council meeting for a formal decision.
The building is a protected structure of regional significance and is of architectural, artistic and social interest.
It is also hoped this development will reinforce community pride in Glenties' literary associations and support the cultural programmes pf the town's annual festivals that include the MacGill Summer School, the Glenties Harvest Fair and Heritage Week.
Under the proposed lease agreement, public access to Glenties Courthouse will be provided for not less than 60 days in any calendar year.
This proposal will also complement and contribute to the conservation and re-use of The Laurels which is proposed as part of a separate but related development. The Laurels is the family home of Friel's mother. It is also a protected structure of national significance in the guardianship of the Brian Friel Trust.
