Call for dogs to be kept on leashes at Donegal beaches

Parents of two special needs children raised concerns over loose dogs on a Donegal beach on the June Bank Holiday weekend

Call for dogs to be kept on leashes at Donegal beaches

Concern has been raised at the volume of dogs on Donegal beaches that are not on leashes.

From June 1 until September 15 there is a restriction that prohibits dogs from Blue Flag areas at 14 Donegal beaches between 12 noon and 7pm.

This is under a bye-law adopted by Donegal County Council.

Outside of the restriction times, dog owners are permitted on all areas of the beaches but are required to keep dogs under control or on a leash of fixed length of less than two metres. Assistant dogs are permitted on beaches at all times.

Independent Councillor Michael McBride said he had visited Donegal beaches over the recent Bank Holiday weekend and noted the presence of dogs with no leashes.

“The dogs were not acting aggressively, but this was brought to my attention by two different people who were there with children who have special needs,” Councillor McBride told a meeting of the Donegal Joint Policing Committee.

“Even though the dogs weren't aggressive, they were terrified. I think we need to revisit the situation. We have bye-laws that aren't being enforced and there are certain people out there who have great concerns.”

Councillor Michael McClafferty agreed with Councillor McBride's observations, adding: “Not all the dogs are playing football and some are dangerous breeds that could turn on you.”

The Council's Beach Lifeguard Supervisor, Kevin McCloskey, said that procedures are in place and discussions are required.
