Donegal Gardai issue reminder after 'taking the tint' from car

Gardai in Donegal have reminded motorists about the law around tinting of windscreens.

Officers from the Roads Policing Unit, who were conducting a checkpoint with the Road Safety Authority at Drumkeen, took the tint from one car on Friday.

“Excessively tinted windscreens or front side windows present a significant safety hazard for vehicle drivers and their occupants,” a Garda spokesperson said.

“ Visibility is greatly reduced, particularly for night time driving and at times of low light. There are also enforcement issues for An Garda Síochána in regard to driver recognition, the detection of driving offences e.g. holding a mobile phone while driving, and other criminal activity.”

Under Irish law, the glass in the windscreen and front side windows of a car are required to have a light transmission level of not less than 65 per cent in order to pass the NCT test.

Tinting of these windows must not be greater than 35 per cent Most manufacturers have already tinted the windows to the maximum allowance.

Gardai are out in force in Donegal this weekend with the Sea Sessions being held in Bundoran and the Donegal International Rally taking place.
