A man has been ordered to stay off Arranmore island after stealing a tractor.

Ryan McGowan was brought before a special sitting of Letterkenny District Court on Saturday afternoon.

Evidence of the arrest, charge and caution of McGowan was given by way of schedule.

The accused was charged with dangerous driving and with taking the tractor without the consent of the owner.

McGowan, a 36-year-old with an address at Whinfield, Larne, faces a further charge of assault.

Mr Patsy Gallagher, representing McGowan, described his client as 'an island' man and said he returns to Arranmore every couple of months from a house in Larne which he shares with his partner.

Judge Ciaran Liddy granted bail in McGowan's own bond of €100. Judge Liddy ordered that McGowan stay off the island until this matter is disposed of and granted a request from Sergeant Jim Collins that a phone number be provided for Gardai to contact the accused.

The matter was adjourned until the October 10 sitting of Falcarragh District Court.
