Letterkenny's population is largest in north west and three Ulster counties of Republic

Letterkenny is the largest town in the north west, new statistics from the 2022 Census have revealed.

Its population is now 22,549, just short of 2,000 bigger than Sligo.

While the  top five largest towns in the State were all in Leinster: Drogheda, Dundalk, Swords, Navan and Bray.

They were also the only ones with populations over 30,000 people. 

Letterkenny is the largest town in the three counties of Ulster that are located in the Republic of Ireland.

Letterkenny, with a population of 22,549 people, was the largest town in Ulster (part of) and Sligo, with a population of 20,608 people was the largest town in Connacht.

Ennis, with a population of 27,923 people was the largest town in Munster.

Of the 49 towns with a population of 10,000 or more, two thirds, or 33, were in Leinster, 11 in Munster, three in Connacht and two in Ulster (part of).

Among the towns with a population of 1,500 to 10,000 people, Saggart in Dublin was the youngest, with an average age of 30.4 years while Ballyshannon and Dingle-Daingean Uí Chúis in Kerry were the oldest, with an average age of 44.4 years.
