Those gathered for the launch of children’s book Charlie Vagus and the Bubbles heard that the book is already being used in schools and among therapists. Written by Dr Helen Gogarty and illustrated by Dr Marie Drumgoole, the book uses delightful characters to illustrate emotional responses to trauma.

The character Charlie Vagus is a clever simplification of the vagus nerve which is believed to be a connection between the physical body responses and the psyche. Charlie helps the characters to get off the ‘roundabout’ of negative emotions and to follow the highway to understanding, processing and ultimately moving forward from emotions such as anxiety.
The book was written by Dr Helen Gogarty, an attachment specialist and Jungian sandplay therapist. She has worked in the field of foster care as a senior social worker and therapist since the 1980s and has put her vast experience and understanding into creating these characters.
Her long time friend and former GP Dr Marie Drumgoole helped to bring the characters to life with her friendly and colourful illustrations.
The book launch was attended by many of the pair’s former colleagues from the health and social care sector, as well as family and friends.
It was formally launched by Brain and Behaviour Therapist Mary O’Connor who said she felt the book would be hugely beneficial in helping children to understand themselves. It is also an excellent resource for teachers, parents and professionals involved in the care of children.
Ombudsman For Children Dr Niall Muldoon was unable to attend the launch, but he has already endorsed the book and is encouraging its use.
Speaking ahead of the launch, he said: “It would be very helpful for all parents, teachers and therapists who want to help a child to understand themselves better, particularly at this time of high anxiety.
“I commend the authors for the good work.”
