Ballymanus, the documentary, is to premiere at the Galway Film Fleadh this year. A questions and answers session will take place after the premiere in Galway.
The documentary was produced by Patrick Sharkey and directed by both Patrick Sharkey and Sean Doupe.
The Ballymanus Mine Disaster which occurred 80 years ago is ingrained in the hearts and minds of many in the region. At around 6pm on a lovely summer’s evening, May 10, 1943, local men aged between 14 and 34 gathered at a point between Mullaghdearg Point and Braade Strand outside Annagry to examine a floating mine they assumed to be harmless.
Sadly, it turned out to be lethal as the mine blew up killing 17 people at the scene instantly. Two others died the following day and 5 other people were injured. It was claimed the noise from the explosion could be heard up to 40 miles away.
Ballymanus tells the story of one of the worst tragedies in modern Irish history, through the words of the victims’ descendants and the memories of the few remaining survivors.
One of those who took part in the documentary described the disaster as the loss of a generation. The documentary will air on July 14 at 3.30pm at Pálás Screen 1. For more information, please click here.
