Woman in 'serious' condition after car collides with tree

The Letterkenny Road in Derry, which serves as an artery from Derry city to the Donegal borders at Killea and Molenan, has been closed to traffic in both directions

A woman was hospitalised with serious injuries on Tuesday after her car collided with a tree close to the Derry-Donegal border.

The Letterkenny Road from Derry city remains closed following the accident close to Nixon’s Corner.

A silver Peugeot 207 collided with a tree shortly before 8.45am on Tuesday.

A woman was taken to Altnagelvin Hospital, where her conditions was described as ‘serious’.

The Letterkenny Road, which joins Derry city to the borders at Killea and Molenan, was closed to traffic from both directions. Diversions were put in place at the Lone Moor Road junction.

Inspector Craig from the PSNI said:  "Officers attended, alongside colleagues from the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service and Northern Ireland Ambulance Service

"One woman was taken to hospital where she remains in a serious condition at this time.

“We are appealing to anyone who was travelling in the area around this time and date and who has dash-cam footage, to contact police on 101, and quote reference number 345 of 11/07/23."

The Brae Head Road is currently only open for city bound traffic, the PSNI have said.

Those going country bound should use the Lone Moor Road, Blighs Lane through Creggan and onto Killea Road, avoiding Brea Head Road.
