Such is the excitement in Sydney, today’s mass in Milford has been moved to accommodate the Republic of Ireland’s Fifa Women’s World Cup opener.
The Girls in Green take on Australia in Sydney, with Milford’s Amber Barrett the one who secured their place in the competition for the first time, scoring the only goal in the play-off win over Milford last October.
Barrett and Ciara Grant from Letterkenny are part of the Ireland squad, and in Milford Fr Stephan Gorman, a native of Letterkenny. will be saying mass earlier at 10am to accommodate the match.
“They have moved Mass earlier on Thursday, so they can accommodate the 11am kick-off, so that says it all – so hopefully Jesus does us a wee favour on Thursday,” Barrett said in Australia.
"My mum (Jacqui) was saying I had a shout-out at Mass (last Sunday too), so I think I have officially made it.”
Gleneely native Denise McElhinney is the equipment officer with the Irish squad and the StatSports analyst is Niamh McDaid from Carndonagh.
