Leaving Burtonport on train with one of the large bogie fish vans from June 1937-Ernies Railway Archive
The Burtonport Festival in association with the Donegal Railway Museum are delighted to announce there will be a talk on the Londonderry and Swilly Railway on Friday, July 28 in St. Columbas Community Centre, Burtonport at 7pm.
The lecture by railway historian and Donegal Railway Museum Board Member, Jim McBride is titled The Lough Swilly Remembered - A Forgotten Irish Railway. Jim was also the Irish Editor of the disused stations website.
The presentation will cover the history of the famous railway and will showcase many unique unpublished photographs which have never been seen before, from the 1930’s right up to its closure in 1953, as well as other unique railway photographs in and around Burtonport.
The photographs are part of a new book produced by Jim for the Donegal Railway Museum and features Burtonport on its cover, and will be available on the night of the talk.
There will also be an opportunity for local people to talk about their direct experiences of the railway, and members of the public are also encouraged to bring in anything they might have connected with the railways to encourage further dialogue about this important part of Donegal’s history.
There will be a charge of €5 on the night.
