Gardai have issued their latest warning over scam calls after a woman was targeted by a person purporting to be acting on behalf of ‘eircom’.
The woman told gardai that the man came across as being ‘very genuine’.
The man enquired about the woman’s broadband signal and told her that, as her broadband coverage was so poor in recent times, they would install new equipment.
Alarm bells rang for the woman when the man told her that she was due a €246 refund and would have to provide her bank details.
When the woman told the caller that her details ought to have been on file as she pays by direct debit, the man’s demeanour became irate and she hung up.
“Companies who regularly fall victim to these type of scam impersonations will never call and request personal or banking details over the phone,” a Garda spokesperson said.
“We have received numerous report this week in relation to a phone call that members of the public have been receiving from various mobile numbers. When you answer the call you hear an automated message.
“The message will inform you that suspicious activity has been detected on your bank account. You will be asked to press a number to be connected to an investigating officer.
“Should you receive this type of call, please just hang up. If you have any concerns in relation to your bank account then please call to the bank in person or contact them via a verified number.”
Gardai advise never to divulge personal or financial details to anybody via phone call, text message or email.
A spokesperson said: “Do not click on links contained within unsolicited emails or text messages. If you have fallen victim to any type of a scam please contact your bank and then contact Gardaí.”
