Heritage Week events in Raphoe start next weekend

Lots to explore in Raphoe during Heritage Week

The rich and varied heritage associated with Raphoe town will be on display starting next weekend when a number of events have been organised to coincide with Heritage Week which runs this year from this Saturday, August 12 until Sunday, August 20.

The Volt House will host open days from Monday, August 14 until Friday, August 18, under the banner 'Our Heritage in Pictures', an exhibition of historical scenes of  Raphoe and district to include its people and rich cultural and heritage traditions. A selection of exhibits will be displayed outside, weather permitting.

On Friday, August 18 a 'Family History and Research' day assisting people who wish to trace or find out more about their ancestry will take place from 11am to 2pm in the Heritage and Tourism Hub at Volt House.

The same day in the Suile Centre, Volt House Ladies, in conjunction with the 'Living Heritage' theme will host a Bread and Butter demonstration, from 11am, demonstrating the art of making butter and making bread/scones.

The public is invited to come along and try some delicious homemade bread topped with fabulous homemade butter. Scrumptious!

On Saturday, August 19 there will be a guided walking tour, 'An historical stroll back to the early Monastic site and the Rath of the Huts'.

This will be a walk through 'The Smallest Cathedral City in Europe', learning how it got its name, the strong political association with Raphoe and much more. Those intending to join should meet up at the Volt House at 12 noon.

Ros Ban Wildlife Garden near Mongorry, Raphoe will be open from 2-5pm on Sunday, August 20 where you can visit a garden with a Celtic theme and see the displays of medicinal plants and educational posters in a  garden designed to encourage wildlife.

It promises to be both interesting and educational.
