A 27-year-old father from Ballyshannon suffered horrific, life-changing injuries when the digger he was operating came into contact with an overhead power line.

But thanks to an overwhelming response to a GoFundMe appeal, Dillon Feely and his family will be supported as he attempts to rebuild his life over the next year and beyond.

The GoFundMe page was set up by extended family members and by Wednesday afternoon, had received more than €53,000 in donations.

Dillon is described as ‘a loving partner, a father of one and only child of Connie and David Feely.’

The spokesperson added: “He is also a hard worker who was doing his best to provide for his family.”

On August 1, Dillon was operating a truck-mounted crane which came into contact with a high-voltage overhead power line crossing a narrow country road. Dillon was airlifted to St James Hospital in Dublin, where he is currently being treated for severe burns.

The spokesperson said on GoFundMe: “The resulting electrical shock and burns were horrific.

“Medical professionals are amazed that Dillon has survived. Unfortunately, due to his injuries, Dillion has had one of his legs amputated.

“He is not out of the woods yet and is facing a long and difficult recovery.

“Dillon is only 27 years old, and he has a long life ahead of him. But his accident has put his family's plans on hold.”

Dillon has been told by doctors that he may be in various hospitals in Dublin for the next 12 months of recovery. During this time, he will have to undergo extensive treatment and adapt to his new life with life-changing injuries.

The spokesperson continued: “At this critical time, Dillon's partner Aine, along with his parents Connie and David, are by his bedside in Dublin, offering their unwavering support. However, this tragic accident has also created financial strains for the family.

“We, Dillon's extended family, have decided to launch this GoFundMe campaign to lend a helping hand in any way we can.

“Dillon is a fighter, and he is determined to recover from this accident. With your help, Dillon and his family can focus on healing and rebuilding their life. Your donation will make a real difference in Dillon's life and the lives of his family.”
