In a rough sea that is fundraising, the Bundoran Community Centre never stops swimming.
Since 2020 Bundoran Community Centre has hosted the Bundoran Bay Swim.
It has become their greatest fundraiser and is vital in enabling the centre to keep their doors open.
This is the 4th year that Bundoran Community Centre hosted Bundoran Bay Swim.
The event happened over the weekend and had over 63 swimmers and around 500 visitors.
Killian O`Kelly - Bundoran Community Centre PRO and Water Safety Education Manager remarking on the race said:
"It was an adventure to make this event happen this year. We had to postpone the date because of the weather and other events that were planned, such as Beach Clean, the interactive Beach Art and the ball race. The swim route had to be changed for safety and even with these setbacks, the event was wonderful. The feedback from the swimmers was phenomenal, despite the conditions and swell".
It is a non-competitive untimed race, the idea is to bring swimmers together, offering enough structure for them to swim, meet friends, have a chat, bring family and friends to support them and support the Centre.
It is a great choice for athletes looking to be able to swim a 2.4 km and Bundoran Community Centre offers all support in the water providing kayak and boat coverage the whole way with markers highlighting the route.
Great supporters are involved with the project, such as RNCI, Clean Coasts and DLDC. Danielle Carty, the Manager of the Community Centre added:
"The Bundoran Bay Swim is a very important event for us, it brings the community together whilst raising much needed funds for the centre. We are so fortunate to be surrounded by a great team of volunteers who help us out on the day and days leading up to the event! Along with great support from other businesses and local groups such as the RNLI, local Kayakers, local fisherman and many, many more! It truly is a community event in every sense of the word, from the organisation to the roll out to the participation in the events on the day!"
And the good news is that registration for bay swim 2024 will be open from the beginning of next year, so plenty of time to plan ahead.
