There is much sadness in Donegal Town following the death of one of its best known citizens, Liam McCauley.
Late of Castle Street, Liam passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on Sunday evening.
Among those to pay tribute was Liam’s friend and fellow ‘townie’ Cllr Tom Conaghan who said: “Liam was a well-known and popular figure around the town and he was always very helpful when it came to helping out with sport and other local activities.
“He had a great interest in the GAA and was very supportive when I was involved in football.”
Liam worked in the nearby Timony Mouldings factory for many years.
Following his retirement, he could often be found on his favourite spot at the river wall opposite his home.
“He had his own permanent place on the river wall, and he loved chatting to the tourists and promoting the town in his own friendly way,” said Cllr Conaghan.
Liam’s duckhouse on the River Eske brought a huge amount of joy to people in Donegal Town, especially its younger residents who loved feeding the ducks.
Cllr Conaghan said: “He was a good friend. I will miss him, and Donegal Town won’t be the same without him.
“My condolences to Bridie and to all the children and grandchildren.”
Predeceased by his brothers, Paddy, Gerry, Hughie and his sister Mary, Liam is mourned by his wife Bridie, children Treacy, Siobhan, Emer, Emmett, Bridín, Liam, Sinead, Shane and Rosa, his 24 grandchildren, his brothers Anthony and Sean, his sister Nancy, extended family, friends and neighbours.
