School children in Ballyshannon are in for a huge treat with Darkmouth series author Shane Hegarty set to visit schools during the Allingham Arts Festival.

The annual festival takes place in Ballyshannon from November 8 to 12, fostering and celebrating creativity in people of all ages in honour of poet William Allingham.

Shane Hegarty’s visit is sure to delight and inspire a new generation of writers and creatives during his visit.

A former journalist and editor with The Irish Times, Shane Hegarty is the author of many books, including the Darkmouth series about a boy who fights mythical monsters even when he’d rather not. Hegarty is also well-known for the award-winning Boot series – funny, moving adventure tales about a robot who wakes in a rubbish grinder and sets off to find its owner. Future Hegarty books will be released in 2024 and 2025.

A spokesperson for the Allingham Arts Festival committee said: “Shane Hegarty’s public events have become hugely popular, thanks to their mix of jokes, visuals, audience interaction and writing tips.

“He has appeared at major festivals including the Hay Festival, Listowel Writers Week, and the International Literature Festival, Dublin. “

During the 2023 Allingham Festival, Shane Hegarty will perform readings at Creevy National School and The Holy Family National School.

Headline events at this year’s festival include an interview with best-selling domestic noir author Liz Nugent, a keynote speech by Children’s Ombudsman Niall Muldoon and a big-screen showing of the award-winning film The Deepest Breath.

Major sponsors of the 2023 Allingham Festival include the Donegal County Council, the Sponsoring Partners of the Allingham Arts Association and the merchants of Ballyshannon.

The Allingham Poetry and Flash Fiction Competitions are open for entries until September 22.
