Three Leaving Cert students from the Abbey Vocational School in Donegal Town are in Italy at the moment, representing Ireland in international rowing events.
Michael O’Boyle, Méabh McNamara and Grace Masterson took part in the Coupe de La Jeunesse European Beach Sprint at the weekend. Michael who rows for Loughros Point Rowing Club had a fantastic competition, winning the B final to secure third place and a bronze medal in the U19 Men’s Singles.
After their initial race was postponed due to high winds, Méabh and Grace raced well on Sunday morning to reach the quarter final of the U19 Women’s Double. Unfortunately they came up against a stronger team on the day.
The Donegal Bay Rowing Club duo now travel to Barletta in southern Italy for the World Championship equivalent event. This is their second year as a crew to wear the green for Ireland on an international coastal rowing stage.
They will be accompanied by Abbey Vocational School teacher Seamus Maguire who has been appointed Team Manager for Rowing Ireland.
The Abbey Vocational School has been running the Get Going Get Rowing programme in the school with Rowing Ireland and Donegal Sports Partnership for many years with great success.
