There is much sadness in Glenties, Ardara and the wider community following the death of former garda sergeant, John (Sean) McKenna.

Sean passed away on Saturday evening, having fought a long and brave battle with illness.

A native of Cavan where he played county football at Minor level, Sean made his home in Donegal.

While stationed in Ballintra, he was a founder member of Naomh Brid GAA Club.

While stationed in Ardara where he served as sergeant, Sean lived in Glenties and played for Naomh Conaill, where he also served as secretary for a period.

Sean’s love of being active in the outdoors extended well beyond the football field. And even throughout his illness he could regularly be seen on the golf course at Portnoo or out on his bike.

The Naomh Conaill team wore black armbands in memory of Sean in Sunday's Donegal SFC final. Martin Regan, the Naomh Conaill manager, paid tribute to his clubman following their 1-16 to 1-8 victory over Gaoth Dobhair at MacCumhaill Park in Ballybofey.

“He fought a tough battle there now for a number of years,” said Martin.

“We mentioned him in our dressing room before the game and he was a big part of our thoughts today.

“His son John would have grown up with us, we would have been great friends with John and there’s not a county final that we play in where you wouldn’t get a message from John out in Australia, wishing us luck.

“John and all the McKenna family were in our thoughts today and we pass on our condolences.”

Sean is survived by his wife Rosaleen, his children Tracey, John and Louise, his four grandchildren and a wide circle of family and friends.

His remains will repose at his late residence in Kilraine on Monday and Tuesday from 2pm to 8pm.

Requiem Mass will take place in St Connell’s Church, Glenties on Wednesday, time to be confirmed, followed by burial in Clar Cemetery, Donegal Town.
