A District Court Judge has ordered that €5,900 found in a Matrix DVD during a drugs raid be given to St Vincent de Paul.
Judge Éiteáin Cunningham made the order at Monday’s sitting of Letterkenny District Court.
The money was found during a Garda raid under the Misuse of Drugs Act at the home of Brian Benson.
Sergeant Jim Collins told the court that Benson’s legal representative had not sought a return of the money,
Sergeant Collins sought the forfeiture of the money and asked that it be given to charity.
Judge Cunningham directed that the funds be given to the Letterkenny branch of St Vincent de Paul.
A further €370 found when Gardai swooped on Benson’s home is to be given to the Donegal Hospice.
In October 2022, Benson was given a two-month prison sentence, which was suspended for 12 months for the possession of cannabis for the purpose of selling or supplying it to others.
The €5,900 was found hidden in a Matrix DVD box when Gardai raided Benson’s home at The Elms, Letterkenny, on May 11, 2018.
A further sum of €325 seized in a separate drugs raid, was directed to the Donegal Hospice by Judge Cunningham. Sergeant Collins said that the money was believed to have originated from the sale or supply of drugs.
