Get Freezin’ for a Reason as the Polar Plunge returns to Rathmullan

The Polar Plunge is a popular December event in Rathmullan

There will be plenty who will Get Freezin’ for a Reason as the Polar Plunge returns to Rathmullan next month.

The long-running, popular event involves jumping into the refreshing winter waters of the Swilly in support of the amazing athletes and programmes of Special Olympics. Individuals and groups are encouraged to sign up for the event and begin fundraising to get Freezin’ for a Reason!

The Polar Plunge is set to take place on Saturday, December 9 at 2pm from Rathmullan Pier, but the fun neither starts nor ends there. A full day of varied and fun activities will include a Christmas market, Santa and Mrs Claus storytelling sessions and Christmas carol sing-alongs, and more.

Special Olympics Ireland’s charity partners Gala Retail are sponsors for the event, and the activities organised to support the Polar Plunge Rathmullan are funded by the International Fund for Ireland under the Communities in Partnership Programme.

John Gallagher, Director of Rathmullan the Way Forward, said: “Rathmullan the Way Forward are delighted to support the Special Olympics Polar Plunge event in Rathmullan, we look forward to a great crowd and a great day!'

Seamus Campbell, Regional Development Officer for Clubs with Special Olympics Ulster, said: “What’s great about this event is that the whole community around Rathmullan come together to help us raise much-needed funds to support our Special Olympics athletes and clubs.”

12 - 5pm - Christmas Market and Christmas Craft Activities - The Pier Sheds
Browse stalls including original art, crafts and homemade baked goods, and take part in Christmassy crafting! Come away with something unique for a friend or loved one's present.

12.30pm - Polar Plunge Registration - The Pier
Get registered and get ready for an ice-cool experience!

1.30pm - 2pm - Let’s Get Pumped for the Plunge - The Pier
Join Mr Move-it and DJ Groove-it as they film their debut smash-hit fitness video in aid of the Polar Plunge Rathmullan! These two aspiring fitness gurus are using their amazing skills to make their own video where they put the fun into fitness and get everyone hot and sweaty and ready for a cool dip! But... they need your help! They’ve only got 30 minutes to film the most incredible fitness video in the world...and without your awesome attitude, super sprints and sea plunging, it’s sure to be a flop! So, lace up those kicks, get your sweatbands and sea creature outfits on... because it’s time to get pumped for the plunge.

2pm - The Polar Plunge - The Pier - Prizes for Best Costume!
It's the main event! So jump right in, get Chilly in the Swilly and get Freezin' for a Reason!

3pm and 4pm - Mrs Claus Storytelling Sessions & Santa Visit - Back of Beachcombers Bar
Warm your body and your heart with festive fun as the North Pole's most famous Mr and Mrs tell tales and make an appearance.

5pm - Christmas Carol Sing-Along @ Back of Beachcombers Bar
The Christmas Carol Sing-Along will be led by local musicians Carol Wilson and Sinead Gallagher, also known as The Singing Woman!

6pm - Rathmullan Christmas Light Switch-On
The Christmas season can truly begin as the Christmas lights are switched on.
