Joe Gibbons has presented cheques to Cancer Care West Support Centre Donegal and Pieta for €13,500 each after participating in the New York marathon.

Joe ran the 26 miles 85 yards in the Big Apple in 2:52:26 less than a year after being given the all-clear from lymphoma - a cancer of the glands - after undergoing undertaking chemotherapy in 2022.

Joe and his wife Susanna were in New York to celebrate their 10th anniversary on marathon weekend in November. They have two sons, Jack, now nine, and seven-year-old Oisin.

A storeman at Curry’s electrical shop in Letterkenny, Glenswilly native Joe and with the help of his general manager Martin Goldrick, set up a GoFundMe with a figure in mind - before totally exceeding his best aims multiple times over.

“I thought at the time if I raised €5,000 then I would have been delighted,” Joe tells DonegalLive. “So I’m delighted to have raised what I did and I can only thank all the people who donated and helped in any way, and to Martin and the team at Curry’s and, of course, to my own for their help. If the money raised can help even one person then it will have been worth it.”
